(Spotting)
It was another sweltering summer day in the sleepy coastal town of Slaybrook. The sun hung heavy and bright in the cloudless azure sky, its rays shimmering off the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean like a million diamonds strewn across an endless blue canvas.
Jayson trudged down the sand dunes towards the beach, his bare feet sinking into the hot, gritty grains with each step. He was dressed in his typical straight-bro attire - faded denim cut-offs riding low on his hips, a loose white linen shirt left unbuttoned to reveal his chiseled, sun-kissed torso, and a pair of aviator sunglasses perched atop his strawberry blond hair that fell in casual waves around his pale face. His eyes, a striking pale blue with hints of silver, were hidden behind dark lenses as he scanned the beach, always vigilant to not let anyone suspect the truth lurking beneath his carefully crafted heterosexual persona.
At 21, Jayson had already honed the art of deception into an Olympic-level sport. To the world, he was just another surfer dude - easy-going, laid-back, with a penchant for picking up random chicks at beachside bars and fucking them in his van under the moonlight before sending them packing come dawn's light. It was a lonely existence, but it kept suspicion at bay... or so he thought.
Unbeknownst to Jayson, fate had other plans that day in the form of Charlie, a strapping 19-year-old who had just moved to Slaybrook with his family. Charlie was already causing quite the stir among the local ladies - and not a few of the men - as he strutted down the beach like Adonis come to life. His honey blond hair glinted in the sun, curling slightly at the nape of his neck, and his dark blue eyes smoldered with an intensity that made even the most hardened beach bunnies swoon.
Jayson first laid eyes on Charlie as he was setting up his beach towel near the shoreline. He tried to look away, to keep up his aloof exterior, but something about the younger man drew him in like a moth to a flame. Maybe it was the way Charlie's swim trunks hugged the impressive bulge between his legs... or perhaps it was the way he moved with such easy confidence, as if he owned the very sand beneath his feet.
Whatever the reason, Jayson found himself watching Charlie from afar throughout the day - when he wasn't busy flirting with a bevy of bikini-clad beauties, that is. He watched as Charlie challenged some locals to a game of beach volleyball, his muscular physique glistening with sweat as he dove for spiked balls and laughed freely at his own triumphs.
And then, in a moment that would change everything, their eyes met across the crowded beach. Jayson felt a jolt run through him like electricity at the intensity in Charlie's dark blue gaze. He quickly looked away, cursing himself for letting his guard down... but not before noticing how Charlie had paused mid-step, a flicker of intrigue - or was that confusion? - crossing his handsome face.
Little did Jayson know, he had just set something in motion that could never be undone. For as much as he tried to deny it, the spark between them was palpable... and growing stronger with each passing moment spent in close proximity on that fateful beach day.
But would either man acknowledge what they felt before one of them left Slaybrook for good? Or would Jayson's fear of exposure and Charlie's stubborn heterosexuality keep them from exploring the undeniable connection simmering beneath the surface?
(They meet - Day 1)
Only time - and a whole lot more steamy, unspoken glances exchanged between beach towels - would tell if these two lost souls could find their way to each other... and to the love story neither of them knew they desperately needed. But hey, that's life on the beach for you: unpredictable as hell, but always full of surprises waiting to happen. As the sun began to set, painting the sky in brilliant hues of orange and pink, Jayson found himself drawn towards Charlie like a magnet. He told himself it was just to grab another beer from the cooler near where Charlie's towel lay, but deep down he knew it was something more.
Charlie looked up as Jayson approached, his dark blue eyes narrowing slightly in thought. "Hey man," he said casually, taking a swig of his own beer. "You're Jayson, right? I'm Charlie." He extended a hand in greeting.
Jayson hesitated for just a moment before grasping Charlie's hand firmly, feeling the calluses on his palm from years of surfing and sports. "Yeah, hey," he replied, trying to keep his voice steady. "Just moved here, huh? What brings a guy like you to a boring little town like Slaybrook?"
Charlie chuckled, leaning back on his elbows as he regarded Jayson with a curious gaze. "Nah, it's not so bad," he said easily. "My family's always loved the beach, and I figured it'd be a good place to unwind before starting college."
Jayson nodded, taking a seat a respectful distance away on his own towel but angling himself towards Charlie. They fell into an easy conversation then - talking about surf spots, local legends, the best places to grab a burger. Jayson found himself drawn in by Charlie's quick wit and laid-back attitude.
As the stars began to emerge overhead, their laughter and banter continued to flow freely, punctuated occasionally by swigs of beer. Jayson felt a lightness in his chest that he hadn't experienced in years - it was exhilarating to let his guard down, even just a little.
But as quickly as it had begun, the moment shattered like glass when Charlie's phone pinged with an incoming text. He glanced at the screen and chuckled again, but this time there was a different tone to it. "Duty calls," he said, standing up and grabbing his towel. "A few of the guys are headed over to O'Malley's for some pool. You should come."
Jayson felt a pang of something - jealousy? disappointment? He quickly pushed it down, reminding himself that Charlie was straight and he needed to keep his own attraction hidden. "Nah, I'm pretty beat," he said with a casual shrug. "You guys have fun though."
Charlie hesitated for just a second, his eyes searching Jayson's face as if trying to discern something hidden there. But then he shrugged himself and grinned. "Suit yourself, man. Catch you tomorrow maybe?"
"Yeah, sounds good," Jayson replied easily, even as his heart stuttered at the thought of seeing Charlie again. As the younger man walked away, Jayson let out a shaky breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding.
Little did he know, that conversation on the beach was only the beginning - the first tentative step towards something neither of them could have anticipated or predicted. The road ahead would be filled with twists and turns, moments of confusion and longing and fear... but it would also lead to a love story for the ages, as long as they had the courage to follow where their hearts led.
For now though, Jayson watched Charlie go until he disappeared into the night, a small smile playing at the corners of his mouth. Just like that, life on Slaybrook beach had thrown him another curveball - and for once in his carefully controlled existence, Jayson found himself hoping that this surprise would be one worth holding onto.
(2nd meet - day 2)
The next day dawned bright and clear, just like the one before it. Jayson found himself drawn to the same stretch of beach, his heart pounding in anticipation even as he told himself he was being ridiculous. Of course Charlie would have moved on by now, found other friends to hang out with at the beach and the bar. Guys like him didn't go for guys like Jayson... not that Jayson wanted them to, of course.
But as he spread his towel out on the sand and settled in to wait for the tide to come in, he couldn't shake the feeling of unease mixed with excitement fluttering in his gut. And then, just as he was starting to convince himself that he was being stupid, he heard a familiar voice behind him.
"Hey, I thought that was you."
Jayson turned around slowly, trying to keep his expression neutral even as his heart leapt into his throat at the sight of Charlie standing there, surfboard tucked under one muscular arm and a grin on his handsome face. "Oh, hey," he replied casually, sitting up and brushing sand off his shorts. "Didn't think I'd see you again so soon."
Charlie shrugged, settling himself down on Jayson's towel without preamble - a move that sent Jayson's pulse racing even as he tried to act nonchalant about it. "I'm here every day," Charlie said easily. "Figured I might as well come say hi since we're like, neighbors now."
Jayson raised an eyebrow at that, but before he could respond, Charlie was already standing back up and grabbing his board. "Wanna catch a few waves with me?" he asked, jerking his head towards the water where the waves were starting to build.
Jayson hesitated for just a moment - surfing together would mean getting close, touching... all sorts of dangerous things if he let himself think about it too much. But the thought of spending more time with Charlie was too tempting to resist. "Yeah, sure," he said finally, grabbing his own board and falling into step beside Charlie as they walked down to the water's edge.
