The sun hung low and heavy in the sky, painting the small island town of Mariposa Cove in hues of amber and crimson as Jess strolled along the weathered planks of the boardwalk. The salty sea breeze carried whispers of secrets and forgotten dreams, mingling with the distant cries of seagulls circling lazily overhead.
Jess was a newcomer to this isolated haven, having arrived only days ago in search of solace from his troubled past. At twenty-two, he possessed an air of rugged Handsomeness - tanned skin stretched taut over lean muscles earned through years of physical labor under the scorching sun elsewhere; dark hair perpetually tousled by unseen winds hinting at a wild streak; eyes that held shadows suggesting untold stories etched behind their deep blue depths.
Lost in contemplation, Jess didn't immediately notice her when he first entered The Rusty Anchor. It was Mariposa's sole bar and grill, nestled between ramshackle buildings like the town's best kept secret. Dim lighting flickered over faded photographs adorning nicotine-stained walls - snapshots of happier times captured in silver gelatin prints now cracked with age.
Behind the worn mahogany counter stood Diane. Barely twenty-two summers old herself, yet radiating a quiet confidence that belied her youth, she moved with practiced ease pouring drafts and mixing cocktails for the smattering of patrons nursing their evening drinks at this early hour before twilight faded completely into night's embrace.
Jess slid onto an unoccupied stool directly across from where Diane worked. She glanced up briefly as he settled himself but said nothing, continuing to wipe down glasses with a well-worn rag in measured motions while her emerald eyes remained fixed on some distant point beyond him visible only through the grimy window behind his head.
"I'll have what they're having," Jess finally spoke after an extended silence between them broken solely by the muted clinking of ice cubes against glass and hushed murmurs from other patrons. Diane met his gaze then, jade eyes flickering over his face assessingly before she turned to pour a generous serving without asking twice whether he meant beer or liquor.
"Rough day?" Her voice carried an amused lilt as much as genuine curiosity when she slid the glass towards him on the polished wood surface separating them. Jess flashed her a crooked smile, taking a long pull from his drink before replying,
"You could say that." He set it down with deliberate care. "Just trying to figure out where I fit in around here."
Diane leaned forward slightly resting elbows atop the bar top as she studied him openly now, full lips curling into something akin to intrigue mixed liberally with wariness.
"Mariposa has a way of...sorting things out for you." Her words held an unspoken weight, a hint of secrets buried beneath sun-bleached sand and forgotten in tidal pools. "Stick around long enough, it'll tell you what you need to know about yourself too."
With that cryptic observation left hanging between them like smoke curling from the end of a spent cigarette butt flicked carelessly into the gutter outside The Rusty Anchor's faded red door, Diane straightened up and turned away purposefully. Leaving Jess alone with his drink and racing thoughts as shadows lengthened across the boardwalk just beyond those grimy windows as night descended on Mariposa Cove like a velvet cloak, The Rusty Anchor began to fill up. Fishermen in worn overalls swapped sea tales while nursing their whiskies, locals bellied up to the bar for Diane's signature concoctions. Yet amidst the growing din and clamor of glasses, her emerald eyes kept drifting back to Jess.
There was something about him - a raw edge beneath that rugged exterior, shadows lurking in those ice blue depths hinting at unspoken stories. It intrigued her, drew her in like the tide pulled towards Mariposa's shores each evening.
Hours slipped by marked only by clinking glasses and muted laughter until the bar emptied out save for Jess nursing his final drink of the night under Diane's watchful gaze from behind the counter now cluttered with empty tumblers. The air felt charged, heavy with unspoken tension stretching taut between them.
"You know," she began softly as she wiped down the mahogany surface before her with deliberate slowness to avoid breaking eye contact just yet. "Mariposa doesn't often take kindly to outsiders."
A flicker of amusement danced at the corners of Jess's mouth even while weariness etched itself more deeply around those striking blue eyes. "Oh yeah? And what makes you think I'm an exception?" His voice, low and gravelly from hours of conversation under the bar lights' dim glow.
Diane felt a shiver run through her, something primal awakening beneath that casual question weighted with unspoken promise. Setting down her rag, she rounded the counter until mere inches separated their bodies now, jade eyes smoldering up at Jess as slender fingers traced playfully along his forearm.
"Because," she murmured silkily, "I have a feeling about you." Her gaze dropped pointedly to his lips before flickering back upward again. "Mariposa sees what it likes...and I think maybe..."
She paused for effect, heart pounding wildly in her chest at the blatant boldness of this move while every fiber screamed caution - but Mariposa had always brought out a reckless streak she couldn't quite control around certain men like Jess. "Maybe you and me could make our own luck tonight." Jess's eyes darkened with a hunger that sent Diane's pulse racing as he leaned in closer until their breath mingled in the scant space between them. His voice dropped to nearly a whisper, roughened by desire. "And what exactly did you have in mind for us and this...luck?"
Diane wet her lips slowly before answering, holding his gaze with brazen intensity she knew he couldn't misinterpret now that they stood teetering on the precipice of something raw and electric. Her hand slid from his arm to splay across his chest over the fabric of his shirt.
"I was thinking..." She had to pause for composure as her own breath hitched slightly at this bold flirtation spiraling out beyond anything she'd ever dared before with a patron, even one who set her nerves alight like Jess did. "My place is just upstairs...no one would bother us there."
Jess's hand came up slowly to tuck an errant lock of hair behind Diane's ear in a gesture almost tender despite the charged atmosphere crackling between their bodies now pressed so intimately close together at last under cover of The Rusty Anchor's faded red door and grimy windows reflecting back only darkness as Mariposa Cove slipped into its nightly slumber.
"I'd like that," he murmured, lips nearly brushing her ear with those low words dripping sensual promise. "Lead the way."
Diane led him through a narrow doorway behind the bar to climb creaky wooden stairs illuminated by flickering bare bulbs. Each step seemed amplified in their shared silence broken only occasionally by Jess's heavy footsteps echoing Diane's own lighter tread as anticipation coiled hot and tight low in her belly.
She unlocked an unassuming door at the top of the landing revealing a small but cozy apartment, all worn furniture upholstered in faded floral prints and lace doilies. It spoke of someone's grandmotherly touch rather than any youthful occupant - except perhaps for Diane herself sprawled on that overstuffed sofa reading racy novels she hoped her dear departed abuela would forgive.
Jess seemed to fill the space as he stepped inside, broad shoulders nearly brushing each side wall while his gaze swept appraisingly across every detail. When those striking blue eyes finally landed back upon her face again, Diane felt a flush spread beneath her sun-kissed skin at their blatant appreciation of what they saw there.
"Nice place," Jess commented mildly as he shrugged off his jacket to drape it carelessly over the room's single armchair before turning towards her fully now. The air between them shifted imperceptibly with that casual motion, tension winding tighter still until Diane swore she could feel every breathless beat of her own racing heart.
"Thank you." She forced herself to respond calmly even as a tremor ran through her at his approach like the first warning shiver before thunder rumbled in an approaching storm. "I've grown quite fond of it."
Jess stopped mere inches away, close enough for Diane to catch that scent again - salt and something darkly masculine beneath which made her want to bury herself against him and breathe deeply until she drowned utterly on its intoxicating essence.
His large hands came up slowly as if he meant merely to rest them lightly upon the delicate bones of her shoulders. But then those long fingers curled deliberately around, kneading into taut muscle there while calloused thumbs rubbed firm circles over each collarbone peeking out from beneath a thin white top suddenly feeling far too flimsy against his deliberate touch.
"You're tense," Jess murmured lowly as if commenting on the weather rather than noting aloud an effect of his own proximity. His head dipped slightly to bring their mouths nearly level now, lips hovering just shy of brushing hers in blatant invitation yet still holding back that final point of no return they both teetered precariously upon.
Diane swallowed hard around a sudden tightness in her throat and nodded jerkily once before replying with breathless honesty. "You make me...nervous." Her tongue flicked out to wet lips gone suddenly dry as Jess watched the small movement like a predator stalking its prey through moonlit forest shadows.
"In a good way," she clarified quickly, jade eyes flickering up from his mouth to meet that heated gaze head on now even if her voice wavered slightly with barely concealed desire.
Jess's chuckle reverberated lowly against the scant distance still separating them until Diane felt it resonating deep within her own chest. "I'll take that as a compliment," he drawled, fingers sliding slowly upwards to skim along the slender column of her neck now flushed and warm beneath his touch.
"Though I think maybe..." Those wandering hands drifted outwards across cap sleeves stretched taut over toned shoulders before curling around fully behind Diane's back like steel bands suddenly pulling her flush against him without warning or gentleness. "We both know damned well it ain't just nerves between us right now."
Diane gasped sharply at the sudden contact, a sound swallowed up entirely by Jess's mouth claiming hers in an abrupt kiss that stole whatever breath remained trapped helplessly within her lungs crushed flat beneath his unyielding chest.
She melted against him instinctively even as rational thought screamed a warning deep inside her mind - this was moving too fast! They were strangers still despite the undeniable pull drawing them together like opposite ends of a magnet. And yet...
And yet, Diane found herself kissing Jess back fiercely after only that one stunned moment's hesitation. Her own hands fisted eagerly in his shirtfront dragging him impossibly closer even as she arched wantonly into every dominating sweep and slide of his clever tongue delving deep to lay claim over her mouth.
He tasted darkly masculine just like he smelled, all forbidden sin and dangerous promise threatening to drown her utterly if Diane let herself sink beneath those tempting waves. But oh how desperately she ached to do exactly that!
